Social entrepreneurship, this is how we do it at Quooker

At Quooker, we don’t just create a sustainable product; we also do so in a socially responsible way, with care for people, animals and the planet. We work with suppliers who share our values, such as Confed in Dordrecht.

At our head office in Ridderkerk and in our field service teams, nearly 700 people are employed. What is less well known is that a little further away, at Confed in Dordrecht, more than 120 people are also working with great dedication on our products. These are people who, due to a physical or mental disability, have a distance to the labour market. Under the guidance of a team leader, they carry out the pre-production for a number of components used in our taps.

“I was there recently to hand out drinking bottles as a small gift,” says Michiel van Veen, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Quooker. “And, as every time, I was once again touched by the dedication of the people there. I told them that as well. I had brought a clock and showed them the back of it. Look, I said, all those little gears, that’s you. You make sure the hands on the front of the clock show the correct time. Thanks in part to you, we can all create a product we are incredibly proud of.”

'The fact that Quooker expresses that everyone is relevant is very important to me.'

“That doesn’t come out of nowhere: I’m married and have three sons, and the middle one has multiple disabilities. He is now thirteen, and I think a lot about his future: what kind of place will there be for him in society? Where will he be able to show his talents later in life? The fact that Quooker is committed to supporting people who are vulnerable makes me feel very much at home in the company.

Caring for one another is a core value here. You see it in the small things: greeting each other on the work floor, taking the time for a chat. But also in the bigger things: being critical about who you work with and emphasizing social values in the contracts you make with suppliers. We’ve never calculated what it would cost or bring us if we didn’t have our pre-production done at Confed but somewhere else. We want to work with Confed because we believe it’s important. It’s as simple as that.”
