Made Blue and Quooker: together for clean drinking water in developing countries

At Quooker, we create products that help save large amounts of water each year. But the benefits go beyond households using a Quooker. The water saved is donated, through the Made Blue Foundation, to developing countries where access to clean drinking water is limited.

“In ten years, we have already donated 3,438,636,464 liters of water.”

For those with a Quooker, having cold, hot, boiling, sparkling, and filtered water from one tap quickly becomes normal. In many parts of the world, this is not the case. In countries like Nepal and Ethiopia, people sometimes have to walk miles to collect a single container of water. At Quooker, that is something we will never get used to. That’s why we have been working with Made Blue since 2015. This Dutch organization is committed to providing clean drinking water to people who lack access to it. Together, we developed the “liter for a liter” campaign: for every liter of water saved with a Quooker, we donate one liter to Made Blue.

A liter for a liter An average household can save around 4,200 liters of water per year with a Quooker. This means that for every Quooker sold, 4,200 liters of water are donated to Made Blue. The organization ensures that these liters reach the places where they are needed most. Made Blue invests in new and existing water systems in countries such as Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Uganda, Malawi, and India. They support the construction of water points and empower local communities to manage them. In ten years, Quooker’s “liter for a liter” campaign has already generated 3,438,636,464 liters of water for Made Blue’s projects, with thousands more added every day. “At Quooker, we are intrinsically motivated to make an impact,” says Sam Smeets, Sustainability Manager at Quooker. “Our focus is increasingly on social impact. With the ‘liter for a liter’ campaign, we increase our impact with every Quooker we sell.”

A long-term perspective Machiel van Dooren, co-founder of Made Blue, explains what Quooker’s support means: “The global drinking water problem is growing. Climate change is causing droughts in more areas, and political instability can disrupt water projects. Some projects are stopped unexpectedly. Long-term partnerships with committed donors like Quooker allow us to provide the continuity that is essential for these projects. Our collaboration with Quooker goes beyond financial support. We also benefit from each other’s knowledge, for example in water filtration. We are in ongoing discussions about how we can expand our collaboration in the future.”
