Quooker actively supports employees’ mental wellbeing

At Quooker, we believe in taking good care of our employees. Through our vitality program, we help them stay fit and healthy, not only physically but mentally as well. During Mental Health Week, we go the extra mile.

“Going for a walk during your break or workday? Go for it!”

“With a virtual reality headset, a joystick in hand, and a heart rate monitor around our necks, we sat together in pairs. The trainer challenged us to play with our own stress levels. What happens when your stress increases? When does it become too much? And how do you deal with it?” says Yvette Slotboom, HR Business Partner at Quooker. As part of Mental Health Week, she organized a Virtual Reality Stress Mindset Training at the workplace. “Stress is always on our radar. This week gave us an opportunity to explore more deeply what stress does to your body and mind.”

Lunch session The day before, there was a lunch session on the importance of taking breaks during the workday. “We invited a speaker who explained what moments of rest do to your brain, and why it’s important to build them into your routine. Colleagues received practical tips they can apply right away. We hope they take them to heart and take good care of themselves. Going for a walk during your break or workday? Taking a meeting outside? At Quooker, we say: go for it.”

Yoga and breathing workshops Attention to mental wellbeing at Quooker goes beyond Mental Health Week. Throughout the year, activities are organized to promote overall health. “Every Tuesday there’s bootcamp, every Thursday boxing,” Yvette explains. “A colleague gives monthly yoga classes, and we offer breathing workshops. The vitality calendar also includes activities like game nights and painting workshops, because having fun with colleagues contributes to a positive work environment and overall wellbeing.” There was plenty of laughter during the VR training as well. “Some colleagues found it quite tricky, using a joystick,” she adds.

Talking about feelings The vitality calendar is mainly preventive, aimed at avoiding problems. “We encourage colleagues who experience high work pressure to speak up in time so we can support them.” Not everything can be prevented, though. “Sometimes colleagues face personal challenges that affect their work,” Yvette says. “A sick child, a divorce, financial concerns. Talking about it is important, first with a manager, and if needed with HR. If additional support is required, we can refer people to professionals, such as our external confidential advisor or coach. Our message is clear: you’re not alone.”
