The challenges of our Country Manager in Switzerland

On the outskirts of Zurich is Quooker Switzerland’s office. Sven Breitenmoser leads a team of forty people here, who are fully committed to convincing the Swiss of all the conveniences of Der Wasserhahn, der alles kann.

‘The Swiss are conservative. We don’t embrace innovations straight away.’

‘When I first saw a Quooker, I thought: what do I need this product for? I didn’t see it immediately. That’s exactly what I encounter in my work: people compare a Quooker to a regular tap and find the price difference too high. Or they see it as a nice-to-have, something that’s the first to be crossed off the wish list when the budget for a new kitchen is about to be exceeded. A Quooker is not yet part of the standard kitchen setup here, as it is in the Netherlands. The Swiss are more conservative. We don’t adopt innovations straight away; we prefer to watch for a while first. But once we take the step, we stick with it.’

Fans of sparkling water Speaking is Sven Breitenmoser, Country Manager of Quooker Switzerland. When he started in 2016, he was on his own. Quooker Switzerland was still in the pioneering phase. But Sven came to believe in the boiling-water tap. ‘It’s a product you can’t live without once you have it.’ When the CUBE was introduced, his job became easier: ‘The Swiss love sparkling water, so the CUBE appeals to them. The only thing is: they often want just a CUBE, without the boiling-water function. That’s not possible, but it does open the conversation. Because do they really know how often you need boiling water in a day? For cooking pasta, cleaning your raclette and fondue pans, and so on.’

Real estate market Life in Switzerland is expensive, Sven explains. ‘Salaries are relatively high here, but people truly need them. When it comes to buying kitchen appliances, they make careful decisions.’ In many cases, that decision lies with developers, as two-thirds of the housing market consists of rental apartments. ‘That’s where our potential lies. We try to convince property developers to install Quookers in their apartments, adding value and enabling them to qualify for sustainability certifications. That’s a key focus for us.’

Swiss colleagues in Ridderkerk By now, 58,000 Swiss households have a Quooker. Sven’s goal is to grow by 20 to 25% each year. Fortunately, he’s no longer on his own: his team has grown to forty employees. ‘All dedicated people,’ says Sven. ‘They’re proud of our product and convey that. Most of them have visited the Netherlands for the onboarding program in Ridderkerk. It’s incredibly inspiring to see the factory, to see where the magic happens, and to meet Dutch colleagues. It really makes us feel part of this wonderful Dutch company.’
